Vastu House Plan Guide: Room Placement by Direction

Whether you follow vastu shastra devoutly or simply want a home that most Indian buyers will accept at resale, the core placements are worth designing in from day one — they cost nothing at the planning stage and a fortune to retrofit. Here is the practical room-by-room map.

The placements that matter most

Entrance

North-east, east and north entries are preferred. On south- or west-facing plots, position the door in the favourable segment of that face — an experienced designer divides each face into padas (segments) to find it.

Kitchen

South-east first, north-west second. Avoid a kitchen directly under or over a pooja room or toilet stack.

Master bedroom

South-west, and on the top floor of a duplex. It anchors the heaviest zone of the house — which is also why structural engineers like heavy masses there.

Toilets and septic

North-west or west walls, never the north-east corner and never the centre.

Stairs

South, west or south-west, turning clockwise as you climb; keep the Brahmasthan (centre) free.

Vastu vs. good modern planning

Most vastu guidance doubles as sound environmental design for the Indian subcontinent: morning light from the north-east, a kitchen flue on the leeward south-east, thermal mass in the south-west against afternoon heat, and a ventilated open centre. Design for orientation, and compliance largely follows. Then check the plan against your family's actual routines — a rule that fights how you live is a rule worth discussing with your consultant.

Design it yourself in minutes. HousePlanAI turns a plain-language description of your plot and family into an editable floor plan — refine every wall in 2D, add floors and stairs, walk through it in 3D, and get a live construction cost estimate. Free during beta, right in your browser.

FAQs

Which direction is best for the main entrance as per vastu?

North-east is considered most auspicious, followed by east and north. If your plot faces south or west, vastu practice favours placing the entrance in the more favourable segment of that face rather than its centre.

Where should the kitchen be as per vastu?

The south-east corner (Agni corner) is the classical kitchen position, with the cook ideally facing east. North-west is the commonly accepted alternative.

Can a house plan be both vastu-compliant and modern?

Yes. Vastu is fundamentally about orientation, light and airflow — goals that align with good modern planning. Most compliance comes from smart placement of the entrance, kitchen, master bedroom and pooja room, which costs nothing at the design stage.
